Guidelines

For direct infusion experiments, it is preferred that samples be submitted as pure solids or neat liquids. This will allow the analyst to choose appropriate solvents and dilution factors when preparing samples for analysis.

Samples may also be submitted in water, methanol, acetonitrile, or any combination thereof. Please note the solvent composition on the sample submission form, and see the rules under Rules for LC Solvents for additional guidance on what is and is not permissible. Any further questions concerning permissible solvents should be directed to the MS facility manager.

Under no circumstances may samples be submitted in halogenated solvents - a passivating coating on the heated capillary in the ion inlet is liable to damage by halogentaed solvents; replacement of this part is expensive and time-consuming.

Samples should be submitted in a container suited to the nature and size of the sample. Eppendorf tubes (1.5mL) or glass screw-cap vials are preferred. For reasons of safetly, glass containers (vials, tubes, etc.) with non-threaded closures are strongly discouraged.
